If you don’t already know someone in the movie business, or have some other major professional writing background, it is all but impossible to get producers and agents to even read your script.

As a beginner, your best bet is to enter some good screenwriting contests; the best ones pay real cash and get your script into the hands of serious filmmaking pros.

There are scores and scores of contests; a lot of them are not worth the entry fee.

The Cadillac of contests is the Nicholl competition, run by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences (the Oscar outfit). Also very prestigious is the Chesterfield, which is connected to Paramount. Both are insanely competitive, so if your script is anything less than brilliant, you may want to start somewhere else.

You can find mucho info about screenwriting in general and contests in particular at these sites:

http://www.scriptmag.com/
http://www.wga.org/ (Writers Guild site)

This site: http://www.insidefilm.com/ — has a lot of info about film festivals, which often sponsor useful contests.

You really need to do some homework here, or you will waste a lot of time and money. It’s crowded out there, so you gotta bring your best.
