Q&A: I’m a telemarketer, should I throw away the script and just talk to the customers?
Question by Hi: I’m a telemarketer, should I throw away the script and just talk to the customers?
I honestly hate it when telemarketers call me and keep on rambling on and on about a product. But the thing is that you are taught to do this. When I call people, I honestly feel guilty and I can understand their hesitation. So, I was thinking that instead I can first strike up a very short conversation to put the person at ease instead of reading two paragraphs. I know what we’re selling so I can perhaps get to the point and tell them about the product.
Doesn’t that make sense? At least I’ll be more friendly and not like a robot that repeats the same thing over and over again. Thanks!

Yes, I agree with you. So many people try to be manipulative with sales and nobody likes it. They lose sight of you as a person and see you as a parasite. Trying to form a connection, then just explaining what you have to offer is a much better approach.
