Me and my friend are thinking about making a movie based off a video game what steps would we haft to do to make it legit and legal so we can us?

You’d have to license the film rights from the owners of the video game.

EDIT: You would not need permission to write the screenplay; that would be up to whomever made the movie. Just understand that you could write the screenplay and it could never be bought. Also, once you’ve written your screenplay, you might want to see if you can find out if a studio has already optioned the film rights, because then that’s why you’ll wanna talk to.

But, most studios will not accept screenplays from unrepresented writers. And you won’t find many agents willing to represent you unless you’re a member of the WGA.
