Question by Virginia: What type of video camera would I used to make a short movie?
There’s a film competition coming up and I think it would be fun to enter. I have to make a short 3-minute original film with certain guidelines. I don’t have too much experience with filming but I think it would just be fun to enter with my friends. What kind of camera would I use to get a professional look and what do I need to make the script well heard, and the lighting good?

I can give you some tips about the camera, but not about scripting.
The best idea would be renting a camera which I do too. You get professional equipment and it’s definitely better than filming with a handycam.
I rent the PMW-EX1, why? Because it’s a very great camera, sharp, full-hd, 1/2″!!!, 3CCD, records on sxs cards which is pretty cool, shutter angle and so on.
You get a really professional look, the results are stunning. You can use it fully manually and that’s awesome! The iris can be regulated by a wheel, built-in ND filters and the zoom can be used manually as well, meaning you can use it for the “disco effect”.
Have you heard about the lotus 35mm stuff? You can rent one for the pmw-ex1 too. You get a really professional film look with it and a very shallow Depth of Field!
Well, if that’s not what you wanna do, consider buying a panasonic 3ccd camcorder like the hdc-sd9 which has 24p full-hd recording (24p = film look, works pretty well) and dolby 5.1 sound.
Good luck!
