Q&A: What would you do – Sell your Script, or wait to Produce it?

Question by Kana M: What would you do – Sell your Script, or wait to Produce it?
My friend is in a bit of a tough situation. He’s been involved in the film industry for a little over a year now, mostly in short films. However, back at the start he wrote a pretty good action/comic book script, casted the actors for it, and did a lot of the pre-production groundwork. Financing fell through, however, and he has put that film on hold to work on lower budget projects until the right investors come along.

Someone with big connections came across the script and really liked it, especially the idea of the prospective sequels. They want to produce the film entirely themselves, pay my friend for the screenplay rights (a big chunk of money), hire their own actors, and have a go with it. While we do see the good that could come from that, my friend has been set on directing this film himself from the beginning, and there’s no guarantee that they won’t take and ruin the film as Hollywood has the tendency to do.
So, what would you guys do in this situation?
