Or just the box office performance, if a movie did ok or great at the box office are they less likely to release a sequal if the reviews hated it.

Box Office performance only.
It’s simple mathematics…
if the first film made 5 times the money it cost to make then you can expect similar returns on a sequel. You already have the idea and fan-base so it’s a safer bet to make a profit than the original film.
Perhaps if movie goers took more notice of critics reviews then there would be less pointless cash in sequels made.
