Selling a script???
Question by la loca: Selling a script???
If i were to sell a movie script does the production company who buys it usually still want to work with the writter throughout the entire prodution process or do they buy it, send the writter the check and leave it at that??? I want to sell my movie script but i’d also like to be involved in the actual movie production and still have a say so in what happens to the over all film but how does it usually work???

I think it depends on how influentual you are in the writing community and what size production company you sell to. If you are fairly well known, have sold other scripts, ect. or it’s a new small production company then there’s a good chance you could work it out to be a creative consultant in the production process. Otherwise, many directors, producers, etc. don’t want the hassle of the original writer being there to put in their two cents worth. Writers are known for being very picky when it comes to their work and if the producers need to cut something that the writer thinks should be in it, well, you know the outcome of that…
My advice: If you want to sell it and other scripts, I suggest you detatch yourself from it somewhat. I know, easier said than done. But the more you sell, the more leverage you’ll have later on to be involved. Or if you don’t mind not having it on a blockbuster screen with high paid actors/actresses, go with a small production company that will allow you to be in on the process. And who knows? If you enter it in an indy contest, it might just go big. In any case, you need to decide whether money is more important right now. If you sell it to a more established production company, you’ll get the money. If you go the other route, you probably won’t get anything much right away but there’s more possibility later on.
Hope I helped some. Writing, whether it’s novels or scripts, is a cut throat and sometimes demeaning process. Persistance is the key in succeeding in this business.
