The largest Mandarin Chinese program in North America, at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, switched to simplified characters at least a decade ago, although the majority of the surrounding Chinese Canadian population, who are non-Mandarin speaking, at that time were users of traditional characters. Stanford University’s Cantonese program instructs its students with a traditional character set partly because Hong Kong uses traditional characters as well[citation needed].
