Speed Up Your Slow Computer and Make it Last
If you listen to the advertisements, you should be buying a shiny new computer every two years. If you listen to your bank statements, you should be saving more and making due with what you have. Most people can do everything they need on a computer that is a few years old, as long as that computer is running well.
The problem is that is computers that are older often run much more slowly than they did when they were new. The bad news is that there are many causes of this sluggishness; the good news is that you can fix many of them on your own. Here are a few inexpensive ways to make your old computer like new:
First, back up your computer. You should always save your documents, pictures, music, etc. on an external hard drive before changing something on your computer.
Make sure that there is room on your hard drive. Your computer is constantly
writing temporary files, moving things around, and deleting files. If there is not enough free space on your hard drive, it is like trying to move cars in a stacked parking lot. You need at least 10% of your hard drive free, or it will slow to a crawl. Find the icon for your hard drive (usually in “My Computer”), right click on it, and choose “Properties.” If your hard drive is almost completely full, you need to make some room. First, delete unused programs, especially games (Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs). If you still need space, move pictures, movies, and music to an external hard drive, preferably one that is different than your backup drive. Do not bother deleting word documents and other small files.
clean out the registry, a place where your computer writes small files when it performs common tasks. I have never needed to use a registry
cleaner, but some good one can be found at the CNET Downloads site.
The last solution is the hardest but the best: a fresh install of your operating system. Fortunately, it will make your computer run at its best. Unfortunately, it will take a long time. You will need to find all of the disks for the programs you use. Back up your documents, pictures, music, movies, bookmarks, settings, and any other data that you will need later. Insert the Windows or OSX disk and perform a full install. You might need to delete the partition and create a new one. Once you have a fresh OS, install all of the programs you use and copy your documents and data back to your computer. A day and a half later, you will have a smoothly running computer.
And if you want to spend money, there is always buying more RAM. It can be expensive, but it will make everything run more snappy.
Fixing your
old computer makes sense. It is wise financially now that people are saving more and running up their credit cards less.
