Tips for making money/getting a first job?
Question by : Tips for making money/getting a first job?
So, i’m 16 and i’m looking to get a job. Ever since I was little I’ve wanted a horse, and I found a stable that I really like. I want to find a way to get enough money to buy and care for a horse. The stable charges $ 175 a month for board (everything included) $ 35 for lessons(optional), and various costs for random little things. English saddles are usually $ 300 and up, while bridles are $ 60 and up. The horses I’m looking at are all rescue animals and cost anywhere from $ 150 to $ 500. Transport costs vary, but where I am they are usually anywhere from free(friends) to $ 20 an hour. (though that won’t really be an issue, the stable is within walking distance of the rescue place) I have a helmet, gloves and boots, so I don’t really need any clothing. Gas money is also an issue. My parents said that if I can find a way to pay, they will consider letting me get a horse. And they said that they would pay any emergency vet/farrier ect. bills that may arise. I’ve been looking at jobs such as life guard, Kroger cashier/grocery clerk, movie ticket person things like that, as well as babysitting, lawn care, tutoring and other odd-jobs during the school year. The stable I’m looking at lets you work off some of the boarding fee, typically paying the equivalent of $ 5 an hour (but it goes towards board), but sometimes they raise the rate if you really need it. I have a friend who owns a horse and boards there who can help me as well.
I’m willing to give up getting a car for 17th birthday for this, we have enough cars and I’d rather have a horse.
I know it would take a while, maybe a few more years, but I’ve been waiting 13 years for this opportunity and two/three more years is nothing. I have over $ 1000 in my bank account and around $ 400 from babysitting as of now, but I know that only goes so far. I’m not one of those people who jumps into things, I’ve been around horses ever since I remember and have done a ton of research. I’m willing to wait to ensure that I have a good start and that I can pay for everything. I just need a few tips on what I can do to ensure that I have the money. I have the time, heart, and everything like that; my parent just doesn’t have the money, or the willingness, to help me.
I’m on my own with this, i’ll end up paying for almost everything, so any tips you have would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you all!!!!
I already do a lot of stuff out side of school (Civil Air Patrol, marching band, riding lessons ect.) I’ve started researching collages and degrees and I want to go to medical school and hopefully become a trauma surgeon (but that may change.) My parents will pay for my collage and schooling, no matter what. But this is MY thing, not theres and it’s not fair for me to shove my wanting a horse on them when they already do so much for my brothers and me. And like I said, I’ll wait, I don’t have to have a horse this very second… Actually I’d rather wait, it would give me more time do research.

All I hear you saying is about money and what you want. So here’s my suggestion. There was a college called Lake Erie College in Painesville, Ohio that used to have (hopefully it still has) courses you can take toward a degree in Stable Management. I suggest you save your money for college and get that degree. Near campus they used to have a stable with several horses (I don’t know if the horses belong to the school or to individuals) and the students would attend class in their jodfers and such. Good luck.
