What is the best software for this? Will Windows Movie Maker 2 work? Is there another free or paid solution that would be better? I’d like to not spend any money if possible…

Actually, you don’t really need special software to do stop action videos.
Instead, you can actually tell your camcorder to shoot in stop-action. You know that second-by-second look that stop-action movies have? Well, that’s exactly what you can do on camera; you can tell it to record under a second each time.
However, you’ll need a SONY camcorder for this. Just go to Menu>Frame Rec.
