Day 40: Movie Night
Wednesday is weekly Movie Night in the gigantic media room at my friend’s house. Tonight was his turn to pick, and the movie was This Sporting Life. I’d never heard of it, but it was completely amazing. The jacket blurb said it was the movie that made Richard Harris a movie star, and I find that easy to believe; it’s clear that, among many others, De Niro borrowed a lot from Harris’s performance for his role in Raging Bull. Harris in this movie gave one of the greatest, most savage, most understated performances I’ve ever seen. It was clear throughout that Martin Scorsese has seen this movie many, many times.
I’m a movie nut, but I don’t buy movies very often; I own maybe ten DVDs. I’ll be buying this one, though. This movie made me think, over and over, I want to make more movies.
Video streaming may drown out DVDs
