Comedy is serious business. In directing his first feature film, it appears Erik White found out just how tough it is. And though he seems to have a thorough understanding of the formula and techniques involved in movie-making, “Lottery Ticket” has more misfires than hits within its 90 or so minutes of screen time.

The premise is simple. Kevin Carson, played by Bow Wow, is a high-school graduate who lives with his Grandma while working at the local Foot Locker. Though he tries to keep it a secret after his lottery ticket comes up a winner, everyone in the housing project they call home learns of

his windfall. Matters are made worse because it’s Fourth of July weekend. Kevin, along with his best friend Benny, has to keep the winning ticket intact and in his possession until the lottery office opens up on Tuesday, July 5th. That’s where the fun usually begins.

In this case, the almost hopelessly predictable script does — in addition to having all the usual gags and obvious messages about the avarice of greed — head in the right direction. It also contains some clever moments that should not go unnoticed. However, there are inconsistencies with the comedic acting chops of the key players in this cast that make that fun a tough sell. Bow Wow has charm and presence. He’s very popular with female fans and is certainly the main attraction. But his timing isn’t sharp enough to elevate this script and carry the movie. He’s at his best in the serious moments.

As Kevin’s sidekick Benny, Brandon T. Jackson has loads of energy, but shamelessly mugs for the lens so much it’s distracting — distracting enough that it appears to have infectiously caught on with some of the bit players and extras. Ice Cube, though he takes on a limp and a speech impediment for his role as a retired boxer, is still, beneath those veneers, Ice Cube. Naturi Naughton is natural as Kevin’s love interest. And Mike Epps’ wonderfully campy overacting as Reverend Taylor would have worked — if everyone else was there with him — ala any Leslie Nielsen movie. Standouts in this cast are Loretta Devine as Grandma, showing her extensive training in theater and ensemble acting; Keith David as the local don Sweet Tee; and, in the film’s most believable bit of acting, Faheem Najm, with at best two dozen lines as Junior, owner of the tiny shop that sold the

winning ticket, steals every scene he’s in.

As a production, “Lottery Ticket” is ably created. It opens with an extremely well-edited sequence and very cool soundtrack that intends, and succeeds, in setting up the story. There are other times throughout the film that are entertaining to the eyes and ears, particularly where music is involved. It is obvious the filmmakers wanted the camera work, angles and movements, to be a part of the movie as well. For the most part, they have succeeded.

Had playing it over the top, like Mike Epps’ Reverend Taylor, been the route that White had taken, it could have worked. Had he chosen instead to have his actors play it more “straight,” as a comedy/drama, that could have worked, too. As long as they were all on the same page. Stuck in a limbo between the two, “Lottery Ticket” is an at times mildly entertaining piece
