Movie making is no joke, that it can be covered by just few tips. it is a proper amalgmation of arts, science, craft and talent.
Since you wish to make a home movie, most probably on a digital camera, here are few easy tips.
Avoid sunlit exterior and dark interior in the same frame, as the auto exposure will be set on bright light and indoor will become too dark.
Frame the sequences properly don’t leave much of head space.
Try to retain the color consistency throughout the film… for example if you wearing dark pin, it should look the same color throughout.
Don’t do any special make-ups… just social make-up with a lip gloss and shine on cheeks is enough.
If possible, try to use a tripod. If not available, try to keep the hand steady,if need be take a support of something, as leaning against a wall, or dining table etc…
Do not try to play with frame speed.. it will give a chalinish effect..unless you wish to have it specifically. Then you can run your camera at 18 frames per second instead of the usual 25 (for digital) and 24 (for cinema)
Do not shoot extreme darks, it might not be visible on your TV or computer screens.
Do not go in extreme long shots.
Try to restrict in Close ups, extreme close, mid shots and overshoulders and when necessary just long shots. Avoid groups.
The actual pace of the film will be set in the editing. How ever before starting the shooting, you should have a story line in your mind….and a rough screenplay, as to how you will go about getting your shots
and yes the most important of all…never never try to yake Closeups with wide angle lenses (below 40mm) always take close ups with normal or tele lenses. Wide angle lenses will distort the faces. Use wide angles only when specially required for landscaping. Otherwise stick to normal lenses and zoom in and tele lenses.
These are justr a few of the tips…. hope will help you make a better film
Good Luck
