What do movie theater companies do with old film?

Question by Cure for Optimism: What do movie theater companies do with old film?
Like, when a relatively new movie is done showing in theaters, what do they do with the film? Do they get rid of it or keep it around?
Also, do you think movie theaters would make money if they seasonally brought back Avatar in 3D to theaters as a sort of special event type thing?

I think they return the film to the company; they rent it rather than buying it outright,so there is no “old film” left around.
They’d probably make money if they broght back Avatar eventually, but it’s probably a little too soon.
