What do you need to make CGI movies or image overlays on movies?
What do you need to make movies from still images or ovelays on a current one? This may sound a little confusing, but here are some examples: greenscreen, flash animation, those youtube movies where some guys is swinging a lightsaber (that is added after filming). What programs do you need to do this? I am familiar with iMovie and Windows Movie Maker, but they obviously don’t have these features. And are there any programs like that availiable as freeware?
I realize that WMM and iMovie are extremelly basic. I have used them for a while and want to step it up a notch.
how about cinelerra?

for really good CG, you need
1. Modeling program
2. schene layout management
3. video post processing software
You can easily dump a huge wad of cash to get all professional studio quality stuff. I suggest you learn the basics with some freeware programs, then jump up to the professional stuff when you learn the concepts. Blender is a freeware modeling/scene layout/animation package. It used to be commercial but is now free. There are also a ton of tutorials online about how to do different things. Once you learn the basics, you can jump up to cimema 4D, Lightwave, and 3D Studio Max. They’re expensive but worth it if you’re doing professional quality work.
