Well, it’s actually nothing like turning a wav into an mp3, and it has nothing specifically to do with movies.
Bittorrent is a peer-to-peer filesharing protocol that allows users to easily share files and folders with other people on the internet. While this can include movies, it could be documents, pictures, or anything else you can imagine.
A torrent is a small file that describes a file or collection of files that a user wants to share with others. The torrent file provides the name of the files to be shared, and splits the files into a number of pieces, and lists the number and size of the pieces. It is created using a Bittorrent client, and then distributed to others, usually by submitting it to a tracker, which a website that provides that service. But the torrent file could also be sent to someone as an email attachment or passed around on a jump drive.
When you download a torrent file and open it with a Bittorent client such as uTorrent, Transmission, or Deluge, the client is able to contact the user or users that have those files, and begin downloading pieces. Different pieces may be downloaded from different users, and the user downloading the pieces will also start sharing the pieces he has as he completes them. Eventually, all of the pieces will be downloaded, and the Bittorrent client reassembles the pieces, so that the user now has the files. It’s a very efficient and effective way of distributing files, and is incredibly popular, accounting for a large percentage of internet traffic.
