Hey Arunim,
It’s really hard to explain the director’s role, since their jobs vary from director to director… The director’s main job is to direct the actors.. He tells the actors what emotions the character should be feeling… He also work very close with the Director of Photography (DoP), whose job is to chose what film to use, what lights, what equipement, what camera, the mood of each scene, the camera movement, they also create the story board…
Director’s like Quentin Tarantino and Zack Snyder write the screenplays and directs them.. so they are more involved in the process.. Tarantino is known for filming some of his scenes, while normally only the Camera man or sometimes the DoP work the camera… In 300 Zack Snyder became known for his Slow motion/Speed up shots, which became his trade mark (dawn of the dead, watchmen, sucker punch).. He knew what shot he wanted so he talked to the DoP to know if it was possible.. the DoP is the technical genius while the director, the creative one…
Producers have a lot to say about the movie also… in blockbuster movies like Transformers, the producers probably said “I want more of the sexy girl running in slow motion with explosions and CGI”.. that means Micheal Bay had to for the movie to sell (Because let’s face it, Megan Fox sold the first two movies, the third was sold by putting a Non-actress model in it -_-‘).. But Producers of real movies don’t go up to Martin Scorcese and tell him what to do.. because Scorcese knows how to make a movie… unlike Micheal Bay..
So the Director can be 100% involved in the movie or 50% involved… it depends on the Director…
Directors you should follow for their 110% involvement are Guillermo del Toro, Zack Snyder, David Fincher, Chris Nolan, Tarantino, Peter Jackson, Martin Scorcese, Lars Von Trier…
Hope this helps, but it’s hard to explain.. I recommend watching a lot of special features and DIRECTORS COMMENTARY! 😀
