What is the best digital camrecorder?

Question by dewdrop: What is the best digital camrecorder?
I want to get my husband a cam recorder for Christmas. I know zilch about them. He is an electronics dummy so it has to be very user friendly. He won’t be making documentaries, just filming family and friends.
I would like to view the results on our TV and be able to save the movies for future viewing but I don’t want to save them on my computer and take up hard drive space. I am also concerned about price since we live on Social Security and don’t have big bucks to spend.
Can anybody out there help me by naming a brand and model that would fit my needs? I appreciate your help so much!

Your best bet is to get a camcorder that records to HDV, miniDV, or digital8 tape cassettes. These camcorders can already work with your existing computer and editing program that came on the computer (Windows Movie Maker in Windows and iMovie on the Mac). http://motionpicturecentral.com/forum/post-production/editing/connect-hdv-minidv-and-digital8-camcorders-to-computers-capture-video

Tape cassette are the cheapest recording media, can be stored for a long time, and they are reusable. We use Panasonic AYDVM63PQ Professional grade HDV tape. They are available in packs of 10 for $ 35 with free shipping from Amazon. This is half the price of lower grade consumer tape at Wal-Mart for $ 75 per 10.

HDV camcorders can HDV tapes as well as miniDV tapes. They are actually the same tape, and HDV is merely a more robust version of miniDV. MiniDV camcorders can also use HDV tapes as well as miniDV tapes. Digital8 camcorders use digital8 tapes, but they can also use older 8mm and Hi-8 tapes as well.

All of these options store video outside of your computer. The only time you need to transfer the video to your hard drive is for editing. Once editing is complete, you can delete the video on the hard drive and keep the tapes in storage for another editing project or reuse them for another video. http://motionpicturecentral.com/book/video-editing
