My Predicament:
I have a pretty big decision to make. I need some opinions.
OK, I work at this company where there’s a group of telemarketers who set up appointments with homeowners for me and my fellow reps to go out and do presentations with the hopes of selling them our products. Now, I’ve been doing this for a while now, and I’ve made thousands of dollars each week, but the only thing is, if I don’t sell anything I don’t make any money. It’s commission only, and I’m pretty much an independent contractor. I have to use my own vehicle, my own gas money, etc. I really like the freedom this job gives me, plus the fact that I get the opportunity to help people’s families with my products, and the amount of money I have the opportunity to make.
Recently, I’ve been running into some problems. Appointments not confirmed (which means nobody will be home after I drive an hour to their house), not making sales, the sales I do make the people have bad credit and get turned down, or they call and cancel the order the next day. All of these making a huge dent in my income. Also, I have to work pretty much all day from 7:30 when I get up to 9 or 10 o clock at night sometimes even later when I get home. 6 days a week with a half day on saturday and sundays off. Not to mention the fact that it’s 101 degrees outside and I have no air in my car. So it puts a pretty big strain on my health as well as me not getting to spend a whole lot of time with my family, but for giving that up, I get to help other people out and provide a great living for my family…. except for recently. It’s like I’ve been paying to go to work all day every day, but I haven’t made a whole lot of money the past month or two. Also, my car has been breaking down recently, so I’ve had to take time off to fix it (costing me more money).
My bills are stacking up, and I’m selling a lot of my stuff just to pay them. The only thing we can afford this month is rent and electricity, and both of those bills are being paid late. I’ve been trying to go out and find another job, but there’s seriously nothing out there. My only other option is to take the telemarketing job with my company. There, I will work 30 hours a week sitting on my ass in the A/C for about $ 200 a week, maybe more if I set appointments and those appointments turn into sales I’ll get a certain percentage. In exchange I’ll get more time to spend with my family, but we won’t ever be able to go out and do anything fun like out to dinner, movies, etc. or buy nice stuff, but we’ll just barely make it by.If anything unexpected ever popped up (which of course those things tend to) we’d be fucked.
Now, I need to make this decision by Monday. I either bust my ass in sales to hopefully pay all my bills and pray that my car or my sanity doesn’t break down in the process, in turn hopefully providing a great life for my family. Or take a 30hr. a week job telemarketing in the a/c barely making it by.
