I’m running Vista Home Basic, there’s no movie maker software built in.

I recommend Microsoft Office Powerpoint 2003 or 2007, but it can be pricey.
If you want a free program that does that, download the OpenOffice suite. Within the suite you will see a powerpoint alternative that will do just fine for what you want to do.
