Question by chestholio: what was that movie where the kids use tree bark to prevent animal attack?
there was some movie at least 10 years ago in which two kids crossed the desert on a walkabout or something, and used the advice of an elder to keep an aggressive animal at bay: “make yourself tall/big”.
the smaller of the children had a large piece of tree bark that broke in half at an inopportune moment.

IMDb synopsis:
Xixo is back again. This time, his children accidentally stow away on a fast-moving poachers’ truck, unable to get off, and Xixo sets out to rescue them. Along the way, he encounters a couple of soldiers trying to capture each other and a pilot and passenger of a small plane, who are each having a few problems of their own.
NOTE: Xixo has warned his children that they must appear taller than creatures such as jackals when confronted by them. So, they have been instructed to pick up branches, sticks or anything handy to hold above their heads in order to look more formidable.
