Why does society treat teenagers like children?

Question by : Why does society treat teenagers like children?
Today’s generation of teens are becoming more sexually active, acting more child-like than the ones from generations past, and are getting into trouble because they are getting into relationships with older guys who are, say, 18 years of age or older. Plus, we are criminalizing their sexual behavior by putting them on the sex registry list if they pose nude, put up their photos on Myspace and other teen-oriented web sites, have sex with their boyfriends while they’re taking pictures or making movies of them getting it on, and so forth. Plus, we make it illegal for them to consent to it based on specific ages.
Also, we make it illegal for them to not drink until they’re 21 (they’re doing it anyway), not smoke until they’re 18 (but they’re doing it anyway), and not work (although they are doing it anyway, because a lot of the teen gals are doing cam gal work even though they’re minors). The ones who aren’t working don’t learn job and family responsibilities, don’t learn the values from their parents but from their crummy schools and sex ed classes, and don’t progress onto being adults until they’re 18 or later if they go to College. (In generations past, teens were able to make adult decisions even under 18; after all, if they are “children” today, then why do we give them credit cards and learner’s permits?)
Isn’t the “childification” (or infantilization) of our youth a serious problem? Isn’t it true that if you treat young teens as children, that mentality will stick on even after they reach 18 and age past 18? Don’t teens, for the most part, know what they’re doing when it comes to activities such as sex, work, drinking, smoking, etc.? Aren’t age of consent laws arbitrary anyway but should be set by the parents who are raising them?
