Why Don’t They Make Movies Like They Used To?
Where are the movie stars? Don’t get me wrong, I think Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts are great actors and terrific celebrities but movie stars? Clark Gable, Jimmy Stewart, Cary Grant, Carole Lombard, Jean Harlow, now those were movie stars. Gone are the days when the movies and their personalities were bigger than life. The demand for realism has robbed moviegoers of it’s truly magic kingdom. Movies nowadays more often than not prevent the viewer his or her escape from reality. Yes, we know good doesn’t always seemingly beat out evil, we know the lovers don’t always live happily ever after, and wrong doesn’t always seemingly go punished…but why can’t it be that way in a medium that we control? Why can’t we present things the way they should be? In the golden age of cinema there were morality codes that listed what could and could not be shown in a motion
picture. Many feel that this hampered the filmmakers and kept them from making their films as great as they could be. Others feel that this is one of the reason classic films are so good. Filmmakers were forced to be creative in bringing some ideas across to their audiences. Movies were also much more appropriate for a much wider audience. Is it just a coincidence that with the replacement of the morality codes for a rating system, that movie houses lost a major percentage of their audiences. Sure TV took it’s toll but then again TV still had it’s own morality code and the bonus feature of being free (or at least a lot cheaper than going to a movie.) Why is there no one making movies like they used to …challenging but clean. Funny but not filthy. Suspenseful but not gory. Why is it that every “family film” nowadays has to be a cartoon or have an animal in it? The truth is,
there are some that are attempting to recapture the magic of classic films. http://www.earlydaysproductions.com/ is a website dedicated to not only sharing the history and the magic of classic films but also creating short family films in the spirit of the films of old. So while there may never be another Jimmy Cagney or Marilyn Monroe, classic films for the whole family will live on.
