Windows Movie Maker alternatives/Clip-making software?

Okay, so Windows Movie Maker is a pain and I decided to start looking for alternative programs. I downloaded VideoThang, and it’s alright-except it won’t make little clips of imported video. I’d have to import the video, make it a little clip, then re-import it again. I make fanvids, so I use a lot of clips.
I’d just download clips, but I have dial-up. I prefer to make my own, you can understand.
So. I need either another program that can give me the features of WMM without the freezing and pickiness, or something that can turn a long video into several little clips. I’d like any programs to be freeware or relatively cheap/easy to find.
